Rolen update

ROLEN UPDATE: In the bottom of the seventh inning of today’s game vs the Rockies, 3B Scott Rolen was hit in the batting helmet by a Jason Marquis pitch. He left the game as a precautionary measure. There was no indication of a concussion. Rolen told the media after the game that he felt fine but would be examined again prior to tomorrow’s game.

SURGERY FOR VOLQUEZ: RHP Edinson Volquez is scheduled to have right elbow surgery Monday…on the disabled list since 6/2, Volquez yesterday complained of elbow stiffness and soreness after throwing 20 pitches of a scheduled 80-pitch simulated game…a prognosis for recovery will be determined after Monday’s surgery.

UNIFORM NUMBERS: 3B Scott Rolen will wear uniform number 27. IF/OF Drew Sutton will now wear number 15.

TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS: Acquired from the Blue Jays 3B Scott Rolen and cash in exchange for 3B Edwin Encarnacion, RHP Josh Roenicke and minor league RHP Zach Stewart. Rolen is expected to join the club tomorrow. Acquired from the Yankees minor league C Chase Weems in exchange for IF/OF Jerry Hairston Jr.. Weems will be assigned to Class A Dayton. Selected from Louisville the contracts of RHP Justin Lehr and RHP Kip Wells (#38). Pictured below are Rolen and Weems.

Tomorrow’s starter

TOMORROW’S STARTER: RHP Justin Lehr (#62) is expected to start for the Reds tomorrow night vs the Rockies. A corresponding roster move will be made prior to tomorrow’s game. This season at AAA Louisville, Lehr went 8-1 with a 2.51 ERA. He struck out 40 and walked only 10 in 11 starts and 1 relief appearance for the Bats.

Reds acquire OF Wladimir Balentien from Mariners

The Reds today announced the acquisition of OF Wladimir Balentien from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RHP Robert Manuel. Balentien, 25, this season appeared in 56 games for the Mariners, including 47 appearances and 37 starts in the outfield. On July 14, 2000 he was signed by Seattle as a non-drafted free agent and has spent his entire professional career with that organization. Over 3 seasons Balentien has appeared in 130 games for the Mariners. Balentien is expected to join the team tomorrow or Friday and will wear uniform number 64.
