Lehr and Sweet honored

Prior to tonight’s game RHP Justin Lehr received the 2009 International League Most Valuable Pitcher Award. The 2009 International League Manager of the Year Award was also presented to Louisville manager Rick Sweet. Lehr went 13-3 in 20 starts in Triple-A between the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and the Louisville Bats. Sweet managed the Bats to their second consecutive West Division title this season.

TODAY’S TRANSACTION: Today the Reds reinstated from the 15-day disabled list OF Chris Dickerson. Since 8/25 Dickerson had been on the DL with a severely sprained left ankle.

FRIDAY’S STARTER: RHP Justin Lehr will start for the Reds on Friday vs the Pirates, replacing LHP Matt Maloney (blister, middle left finger).

COMMUNITY AWARDS: At tonight’s Greater Cincinnati Community Awards Gala hosted by The League of United Latin American Citizens at Northern Kentucky University, Reds Director of Community Relations Lorrie Platt on behalf of the club will accept the Community Award for its support and service to the local Latino community.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: 1B Joey Votto has 15 doubles in September, tying the club record for a calendar month established by Harry Heilmann in July 1930…no Major League player has produced more than 15 doubles in a month since Bal’s Brian Roberts had 17 in June 2008 and no National League batter has done it since Phi’s Aaron Rowand had 16 doubles in July 2007…courtesy Elias Sports Bureau.

DOT, DOT, DOT…: The Reds have won 6 of their last 7g, 10 of their last 13g and 23 of their last 34g…have won 17 of their last 20g vs NL Central opponents…Cin’s 16 wins this month are the most in September since 2000 (18-11)…Reds defenders have produced a .985 fielding percentage, which would establish a franchise record for a non-strike season (.984, 6 times, last in 2007).

Votto named NL Player of the Week

Reds first baseman Joey Votto, who led the National League with a .560 (14-25) batting average, has been named National League Player of the Week presented by Bank of America for the period ending September 27th.

In six games last week, Votto led the Major Leagues with 10 doubles, 14 hits, 11 runs scored and 27 total bases. The 26-year-old also had an N.L.-leading 1.080 slugging percentage and a .593 on-base percentage while notching eight RBI. Joey mashed 10 doubles over a five-game span (from September 21st through September 26th), making him the first player to accomplish the feat in a single season since Hall of Famer Paul Waner did it for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1932.

During a stretch on September 22nd-23rd, Joey reached base in eight straight plate appearances (five doubles, two singles and a walk). The Toronto, Ontario native had four multi-hit games during the week and extended his hitting streak to nine games. Currently batting .318 with 23 homers and 80 RBI on the season, Votto is vying to become the first Reds player to hit above .300 since Sean Casey and Ken Griffey, Jr. did so in 2005. This is Joey’s first career weekly award.

G-20/20

The City of Pittsburgh today and tomorrow is hosting the G-20 Summit…President Obama is chairing this meeting of leaders from countries around the globe that represent 85 percent of the world’s economy…the leaders will review the progress made since the Washington and London Summits and will discuss further actions to assure a sound and sustainable recovery from the current global fi nancial and economic crisis…the Group of Twenty (G-20) formally was established in 1999 to bring together major industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy. Below are some photos of the affect on the city:

A group of protesters are seen here crossing over the Roberto Clemente Bridge towards downtown. They returned to the other side after meeting a large group of armed riot gear-clad police officers.

The downtown area of Pittsburgh was truly on lockdown. Fences lined the sidewalks and armed guards patroled the streets in formation.  No one was allowed on the streets or in the buildings without proper credentials.  It seemed as though martial law was in affect, no joke.
