Homer’s Odyssey

RHP Homer Bailey will start for the Reds on Saturday at Cleveland.

Last Pitched: For Class AAA Louisville on Monday vs Gwinnett and threw his seventh consecutive quality start to earn the 11-5 victory (7ip, 6h, 1er, 2bb, 8k, 1hr, 115 pitches, 74 strikes)…allowed only a leadoff HR to Reid Gorecki on the third pitch of the game.

Last Pitched for the Reds: On 5/23 vs Cle, in his only appearance of the season received no decision in the 7-6 loss (4.1ip, 3h, 6er, 6bb, 3k, 1hr, 95 pitches, 53 strikes)…left leading, 6-4, with the bases loaded and 1 out but was charged with 2 more runs scored off Burton…the 6 runs allowed tied his career high and the 6 walks were a new career high…walked the leadoff batter in the first, second and fifth innings…in the second allowed 4 runs on a 2-run HR to De Rosa and a 2-out, 2-run single to Cabrera…was optioned to Louisville the next day.

2009 Season: Saturday at Cle will make his second start of the season for the Reds, his first since 5/23…began the year at Class AAA Louisville, where he went 3-5, 4.57 with 2 complete games and a shutout in 8 starts before he was promoted on 5/22…started the 7-6 loss vs Cle on 5/23, then was optioned back to Louisville the next day…made 6 more starts for the Bats (5-0, 0.81) before he was tabbed Saturday’s starter.

At Louisville: In 14 apps for the Bats produced 11 quality starts, including quality starts in each of his last 7 apps (5-1, 1.07, 50.1ip, 47h, 6er, 12bb, 45k)… in his first start of the season allowed a season-high 8 earned runs in 5.1 innings (13.50era) and in his last 13 starts posted a 2.03era (84.1ip, 19er)…following his most recent start ranked among the International League leaders in innings pitched (89.2, 1st), wins (8, 2nd), strikeouts (82, 2nd) and ERA (2.71, 10th)…for the Bats, in 6 starts between his 5/22 and 6/27 promotions went 5-0, 0.81.

IL Pitcher of the Week: Twice this season was named the International League’s Pitcher of the Week…in 2 starts the week of 4/20-4/26 went 2-0, 2.92 with 18 strikeouts in 12.1 innings (10h, 6bb)…in the 10-3 win at Toledo on 4/26, over 6.1 innings he struck out a career-high 15 batters to tie the Louisville single-game record…in 2 starts from 6/1-6/7 went 2-0 without allowing a run (14.2ip, 11h, 2bb, 14k).

TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS: Today the Reds reinstated from the 15-day disabled list 1B Joey Votto. Votto takes the roster spot vacated by C/IF/OF Wilkin Castillo, who went on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Sunday, with a torn labrum in his right shoulder…Castillo suffered the season-ending injury on a head-first slide in the seventh inning of Sat’s game vs CWS.
