San Francisco treat

THE REAL McCOY: Reds beat writer Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News will retire following this season…he has worked for the DDN for 49 years and is enshrined in the writers’ wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown… the longest-tenured baseball beat writer in the country, the 2009 campaign is McCoy’s 37th covering the Redlegs.

TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS: OF Chris Dickerson was returned from a rehabilitation assignment and reinstated from the 15-day disabled list. 3B Scott Rolen went on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Saturday, with a concussion.

TODAY’S TRANSACTION: RHP Jared Burton today was sent to Class A Dayton on a rehabilitation assignment…since 7/26 Burton has been on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder fatigue…he is eligible to come off the DL on Sunday.

MEDICAL UPDATES: 3B Scott Rolen showed no signs of a concussion after he was hit in the helmet yesterday by a Jason Marquis pitch…he will be examined again before tonight’s game…RHP Jared Burton (DL, right shoulder fatigue) and RHP Micah Owings (DL, tight right shoulder) are scheduled to throw bullpens today…OF Chris Dickerson (DL, bruised right rotator cuff) is scheduled to take batting practice today…OF Willy Taveras missed the last 4g with a sore left wrist.

Volquez has Tommy John surgery

VOLQUEZ SURGERY: RHP Edinson Volquez this morning had surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (“Tommy John”) and torn flexor mass in his right elbow. He is expected to miss approximately 12 months. The 90-minute procedure was performed by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek. Volquez went 4-2, 4.35 in 9 starts for the Reds this season.
