TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS: Today the Reds placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to yesterday, OF Chris Dickerson (severely sprained left ankle) and C Ryan Hanigan (concussion)…both were injured in Sun’s game at Pit. Their spots on the roster will be taken by OF Darnell McDonald (#16) and C Corky Miller (#37), whose contracts were selected from Louisville. To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Mike Lincoln (cervical disc surgery) and RHP Edinson Volquez (right elbow surgery) were transfered from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

KEEP IT ON THE DL: The Mets just placed LHP Johan Santana on the disabled list. They now lead the Major Leagues with 12 players on the disabled list. The Reds are second with 11.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE: The Arizona Fall League rosters have been announced. The Peoria Saguaros club will include manager David Bell and Reds farmhands RHP Logan Ondrusek, LHP Phillippe Valiquette, RHP Sean Watson, IF Yonder Alonso, IF Zack Cozart and OF Chris Heisey.

GAMETIME CHANGE REMINDER: The starting time for the Reds’ game against the Dodgers on Saturday, August 29 at Great American Ball Park has been changed to 4:10 p.m. ET to accommodate the FOX national broadcast. The game originally was scheduled to begin at 7:10.

OLD PHONE BOOKS: All fans that bring an old phone book to be recycled to the Reds vs. Los Angeles Dodgers series Aug. 28-30 will receive a voucher good for a buy-one-get-one free ticket offer to the Reds vs. Florida Marlins game on Sept. 19.

TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS: Today the Reds returned from a rehabilitation assignment and reinstated from the 15-day disabled list 3B Scott Rolen…he had been on the DL since 8/11 with a concussion suffered vs Col on 8/2, when he was hit in the helmet by a Jason Marquis pitch…in 2 rehab starts at Louisville Rolen went 2-for-6 with an RBI. Rolen will take the roster spot vacated by RHP Aaron Harang, who went on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Friday…last night he had a season-ending emergency appendectomy at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati (Dr. Joann Lohr)…he expects to be released from the hospital later today.

1979 NLCS REUNION: Tonight and tomorrow the Reds and Pirates will be wearing uniforms and hats from the 1979 season as the Pirates celebrate the 30th anniversary of their last World Series Championship. The Reds played the Pirates in the 1979 National League Championship series, losing the series 3-0. The Reds won the NL West going 90-71 under Manger John McNamara. Attached is artwork of the 1979 uniforms.

OF Willy Taveras was transferred to the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps suffered on a bunt attempt in the seventh inning of last night’s game. Stubbs will wear uniform number 6 and will make his Major League debut tonight.

Top picks arrive in Cincinnati

The Reds first two picks of the 2009 first-year player draft, eighth selection overall RHP Mike Leake (left) and supplemental first-round pick RHP Brad Boxberger (right) were in Cincinnati today meeting with the local media. They will also make appearances on Reds Radio and tonight’s FS Ohio broadcast.

The Cincinnati Reds last night signed their first two picks of the 2009 first-year player draft, eighth selection overall RHP Mike Leake (6-0, 180) from Arizona State University and supplemental first-round pick RHP Brad Boxberger (6-2, 185) out of the University of Southern California.

Leake, 21, was the first pitcher selected by the Reds in the first round since RHP Homer Bailey in 2004. He was the first collegiate pitcher selected by the Reds in the opening round since RHP Ryan Wagner in 2003. The Reds had selected a position player with their first pick in each of the previous four drafts: 1B Yonder Alonso (2008), C Devin Mesoraco (2007), OF Drew Stubbs (2006) and OF Jay Bruce (2005).

Boxberger, 21, was selected in the supplemental first round (43rd overall). In his 3-year career with the Trojans, he went 11-12 with a 3.81 ERA. He was an All-Pac 10 selection as a junior and was a freshman All-America second-team pick.

Both Leake and Boxberger will be at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday night.
