Redsfest volunteers needed

FOX Sports Ohio's Redsfest, benefiting the Reds Community Fund, returns on December 4-5, 2009 at the Duke Energy Convention Center (Cincinnati's downtown convention center). There are less than two months before the doors open to Redsfest and we need to recruit over 300 volunteers to help make the event a success!

09_REDSFEST_LOGO.jpgThis year volunteers will be asked to work one or more of the following shifts:

Friday, December 4   3pm-7pm
Friday, December 4   6:30pm-11pm
Saturday, December 5   10am-2:30pm
Saturday, December 5   2pm-7pm

If you're interested in volunteering, we need to know which of the above shifts you can commit to fully. You may work up to all four shifts, but it's crucial that you're able to commit to the entire shift(s) for which you sign up. We also need to know your shirt size and mailing address. All volunteers who work will receive a $20 stipend per day, a volunteer t-shirt and two Field Box tickets to a 2010 Reds game (based on availability; excluding Opening Day and other Premium Series. Tickets will be mailed out in February 2010). There will be a volunteer training session on the evening of Thursday, December 3 at the Duke Energy Convention Center. All volunteers are REQUIRED to attend this training.

Another part of the Redsfest production is assembling the 20,000 bags we pass out to all fans in attendance. As you can imagine, this is quite an undertaking and we need as many people as possible to help with this enormous task. You may bring anybody you'd like to help and there is no dress code. This is an unpaid duty, but it does count if you need community service hours and is also a great way to stand out and be noticed. It will be held at the Duke Energy Convention Center lobby and you may come whenever you'd like for as long as you'd like. Even an hour here and there is a HUGE help. If you're interested in bag stuffing, let us know what day(s) and approximate time(s) you're available.

Bag Stuffing Dates/Times:

Monday, November 30   9am-7pm
Tuesday, December 1   9am-7pm
Wednesday, December 2   9am-7pm
Thursday, December 3   9am-9pm

Please pass this along to others who may be interested in volunteering.  We take people of all ages (minimum 16 years of age for Friday/Saturday; no age requirements for bag stuffers), it's a fun way to be involved with the Reds and it's also wonderful resume building experience for college students.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Kathryn Braun at KBraun@reds.com.  Thanks!

The Series to determine the champion of the World

Similar to the NLCS where assistant directors of media relations Larry Herms and Jamie Ramsey worked for Major League Baseball, Reds director of media relations Rob Butcher has the duties for the World Series.  Here is his account of yesterday's Workout Day.

Yesterday was Major League Baseball's very first World Series Media Day, held in conjuction with Workout Day. Similar to the Super Bowl, every player from both teams was brought to the Great Hall at New Yankee Stadium and answered questions for 45 minutes. It's a great idea, both for the media and for the players.

Walmart helps renovate Madisonville baseball field

Madisonville Walmart Field.pdf

Just a few hours after Cincinnati's newest Walmart opens in Fairfax on Wednesday morning, a newly renovated baseball field will be dedicated just a mile away in Madisonville, thanks to a generous donation from Walmart to the Reds Community Fund.

The baseball field at Anderson Place will be officially dedicated on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 at 10 a.m., and will be used primarily by the Madisonville Braves youth baseball organization and students from nearby John P. Parker Elementary School.

In 2009, Walmart donated $20,000 to support the Reds Community Fund's baseball-themed outreach programs. A portion of the donations have been earmarked for the Anderson Place field renovation.

Infield grass once again

Yesterday brand new sod was put down on the infield of Great American Ball Park.  Multiple flatbed trucks brought in the new grass in giant rolls, see below.

field_sod1.JPG

field_sod2.JPG field_sod3.JPGThe last time sod was replaced at GABP was after the 2006 season.  Read below for GABP public safety officer Tim Brown's account:

"When we had the TallStacks Riverboat Convention on the Ohio River in 2006,  the Budweiser Clydesdales were stabled inside the tunnel, between the GABP Command Center and centerfield entrance.

Visitors downtown for the convention were allowed to walk in and walk through a roped off area to see the horses and the wagons.

At the same time that was going on... the entire field from left field to right field and into the infield - removed, and new turf put down.

It only took one morning, about 8 am - 11 am to remove ALL the turf and took a little more than that the next day to put down new turf."

Tim also provided this video: Budweiser horses_TallStacks.mpg

Dayton Dragons awarded MacPhail Trophy

The Dayton Dragons have been awarded the Larry MacPhail Promotional Trophy by the Midwest League of Professional Baseball.  The trophy is given to one team in the league each year based on excellence in promotions during the season.

"The Dragons are honored to receive the Larry MacPhail Promotional Trophy and wish to thank all of our fans for making this award possible," said Robert Murphy, Dragons President. "With their undying support, they have made Dragons baseball a truly unique family experience at Fifth Third Field. We would also like to recognize the incredible efforts of the entire Dragons staff including our hundreds of valuable game-day employees, many of whom have been a part of Dragons baseball since the beginning. Thanks to everyone who has helped make Dragons baseball such an award-winning experience."

In 2009, the Dragons finished first in attendance among all Single-A teams in the nation for the 10th time in their 10 years of existence, finishing with an attendance total of 586,071.  The Dragons extended their consecutive game sell-out streak to 704, the longest in professional baseball history and second longest in sports history.

The top event at Fifth Third Field in 2009 was the historic Cincinnati Reds Futures Game on April 4th in which the Reds' Major League club came to Dayton for an exhibition game against a collection of the Reds' top prospects from the Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A levels, a first-of-its-kind event in professional baseball. The event was well-documented in the trade publication for Minor League Baseball, Baseball America, with an article titled, "Dayton, Reds Hit on Home Run Idea."

On July 11th, more than 9,000 fans attended a concert at Fifth Third Field featuring musical legends Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, and Willie Nelson.  Other major events hosted by the Dragons at Fifth Third Field included the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships over four dates in May; a series of 24 high school baseball games in April and May; and the Bob Ross Classic on July 11th, a showcase of top high school baseball seniors from 38 schools.

Among the many elements of the Dragons community relations program in 2009 were the "Dragons MVP Program," a tool for teachers of fourth and fifth grade students; the "Hometown Heroes" program, a season-long tribute to those who serve out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Springfield Air National Guard Base; the "Home Run for Life," a monthly on-field tribute to specific children who have overcome a significant medical event such as cancer, premature birth defects, Cystic Fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and other serious ailments.

The Dragons promotional efforts at every Dragons game at Fifth Third Field featured a unique ballpark experience geared towards family entertainment and fun.  The Dragons primary mascots, Heater and Gem, and ballpark characters Roofman and Wink, were the basis of an entertainment theme that provided fans with a different show for each of the Dragons 70 home dates.  Creation of mascot skits and use of stadium sound, video, and LED systems, coupled with the utilization of well-orchestrated choreography and the Dragons dance teams (the Retirement Village People and the Mini-Dugout Dancers) all contribute to the family-friendly atmosphere.

The Dragons efforts also included an extensive multi-media campaign.  The team provided every fan at each game with a free copy of the Dragons program, PlayBall!, a full-color magazine.  Fifteen Dragons games were broadcast live on "over-the-air" television on WHIO 7.2 through an in-house production that featured a group of guest color commentators including four members of the Reds Hall-of-Fame.  The team also broadcast all games on radio on WING 1410.

The award is presented each year in honor of Larry MacPhail, an innovator in baseball promotions.  MacPhail, former Chief Executive of the Reds, Dodgers, and Yankees in the 1930's and 1940's, is credited with the introduction of night baseball and the use of radio and television to increase the popularity of the game.

Sabo at Hall of Fame announcement

Sabo-RedsHOF-04.jpgYesterday, it was announced that 3B Chris Sabo was the fans choice for induction into the Reds Hall of Fame as a member of the 2010 class, joining pitchers Pedro Borbon and Tony Mullane.  Sabo was present for the announcement yesterday at the Reds Hall of Fame Palace of the Fans theater.

Quotes from 3B Chris Sabo at yesterday's press conference:

"Obviously, it's a great honor. I got voted by the fans, who always liked me. I could look in the mirror and say I did the best I could. I tried hard, and I'm just glad to have played on some great teams with great teammates."

"People ask me all the time what was my greatest moment. My biggest thrill, and it still is, is my first big league game in 1988. Pete Rose let me start Opening Day my rookie year, and to me I had reached a level you dream about when you're a little boy. That's still the biggest thrill I ever had in my life."

George Grande says goodbye

FOX Sports Ohio broadcaster George Grande, the television play-by-play voice of the Cincinnati Reds for the past 17 years, announced he is opting out of the final year of his contract.  After a 45-year career in the broadcasting business, Grande has decided to conclude his current role as a full-time Reds announcer to spend more time at home.

"The last 17 years have been a wonderful ride with FOX Sports Ohio and the Reds, but I have decided to opt out of the final year of my contract to spend more time closer to home," said Grande. "I've enjoyed every minute with my friends at FOX, the Reds and so many fans who have made our time in Cincinnati fantastic. Both FOX and the Reds have great leadership and direction. I fully expect to see the Reds and FOX celebrating a trip to the World Series in 2010, and I will be rooting them on!"

A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Grande has covered Major League Baseball since 1965 and has been broadcasting Major League Baseball games since 1989.

Grande anchored the first ever ESPN SportsCenter broadcast, and following a ten-year career at ESPN, he joined the broadcast team of the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals before joining FOX Sports Ohio and the Reds. In addition to being the Reds play-by-play announcer, Grande was also a broadcaster with ABC and NBC for "The Baseball Network" and has taken great pride in working with numerous local and civic organizations throughout his career.

Grande was honored by the Reds and local media in a pregame ceremony in the Great American Ball Park press box prior to yesterday's season finale.
